I find it somewhat shocking that nothing is said about the initial use of the technology. Possibly, the Army feels that it is best to let sleeping dogs lie. But I would have appreciated some recognition of the sacrifice of many lives, and whether that was necessarily the only way the Japanese would have surrendered. Some speculation of whether a demonstration detonation over the ocean, or a desolate place in Japan might have at least helped to justify its use over a heavily populated area would have been appropriate. Much Monday morning quarterbacking has taken place about the decision to use the bomb as it was, but in general I believe the human sacrifice was so great that it merited some space in the discussion. I do agree that the achievement was awesome, and worthy of the words that the general spoke.
